Road biking IS dangerous, what with the texters, the NASCAR wannabees, the hostile drivers who don't think that cyclists should be on the road anyway and those who enjoy harassing cyclists by yelling and sometimes throwing things. It's scary out there, but I'm still doing it, well-aware of what can happen and too often does. We all take risks in life, some more than others. I still can't fathom those that race their motorcycles up to speeds approaching 200mph on the Isle of Man.

Cities are becoming more walkable though. You ever see how many times the politicians say they're trying to make more walkable cities and that cities aren't walkable? You should ask them "why don't you buy a dang bike? Human powered anything is a dying thing. It's a business desire to control all logistics. It's based upon social network analysis. If you can stay in your house and control all shipping in and out then you're basically in a prison.

You seem mad, and excited motorcycle manufacturers are getting in to "e bike design" I'm actually excited they are getting in to the mix, right now they give us much more bang for the buck than bicycle manufacturers do. And bicycle components just don't hold up to e bike use. We need some wild steps in this direction to get to where we need to be in the market, as a "prototype" none of us have ridden, we have no idea if it would work well or not, like brain storming all ideas are great at this point!

Last year, I was hit by a car while commuting on my bike. I was wearing bright clothes and using a flashing taillight but there's nothing visual that can grab the attention of a distracted driver. In my accident it was a young lady who had a crying baby in the back seat. Anymore, I just have too much anxiety riding on the road. We have a paved trail nearby that goes for nearly 100 miles so I ride on it instead. The downside is I have to load my bike into the car and drive to it.

Distracted driving has made driving dangerous. We have three times Europe's death rate and also about three times their injury rate even after allowing for the fact that Americans drive more miles. Basically, cars got a lot safer the last 40 years, and while they reaped the rewards in the form of cheaper insurance and more plentiful used vehicles, we've simply treaded water on fatalities and injuries and are paying vastly more for insurance and it's harder to find good used cars than in Europe.....all because we're too self-indulgent apparently to enforce traffic laws, pass traffic laws, or support law enforcement in their enforcement of traffic laws. 42,500 dead Americans a year, versus 1,700 in the UK and 20,000 in the EU, even though they combine for way more people. We used to be a palpably safer place to drive than Europe. Those days are long gone.

Disagree with your claim that entry level bikes now are better quality than years ago. I've experienced the exact opposite...and will never buy a new bike ever again. Bought a 2014 Merida 26" HT for around $1000AU. Mistakenly sold it. A few years later bought a 2019 29" Norco Storm 1. Both were roughly the same price when I bought them. The Merida had Deore componentry, Norco has crappier Altus and Acera. Norco came with Suntour fork instead of Rockshok, which had stanchion pitting only after 3000 road kms. All the bolts, except for those on the shimano gear, have rusted. THE WTB rims are crap compared to what was on the Merida. Conclusion: like many other large mass-producing companies, many bike manufacturers continue to drop the quality of their products because their primary focus is profit, not riding or riders. And going by the huge drop in quality from my 2014 rig to my 2019 one, and noticing Giant now shod their entry level HTs with Microshift shifters...I will never buy new. My current ride is an old 26" Avanti HT I picked up from the tip for $5. To recondition and build it to 3 x 9 specs, I used parts off a $5 broken frame Fluid dualie + quality 2nd hand and new parts online...bike cost me around $300, as most parts were taken off $5 tip bikes...and is far more fun to ride XC that the sluggish 29" Norco that's gathering dust in my shed. The Avanti, in current state, will last me for years. My next build is a polygon siskiu D5, also from the tip for $5. Only things to buy were the rear shock - DNM BURNER-RCP 2S DH for $170, and a NOS Zoom 29" fork for $60. I do mild long distance XC, and Zoom is more than adequate. All other parts already have. Will set up as 2 x 10. Total cost, around $500 because most of the 2nd hand parts were from online sellers + new tyres.

Similar in the Uk. Riding off road (gravel/mtb) is just a lot more relaxing as you're not having to think is this person going to kill me every 5s. Whilst there is still a lot of bling available I think it makes slightly less difference off road too, which means more people can get into it and not feel they need a 10k sworks. But at the end of the day cycling is cycling and any form is good.

I no longer feel safe riding on the main roads of southern England. A large influx of people over recent years, and lack of road maintenance has meant an increase in vehicles using poor quality roads. Everyone is looking for pot holes and not where they are heading. It's just too dangerous to ride the A roads these days. I now much prefer to stick to country lanes and off road paths.

In 2016, I stopped riding on the road after 30 years of doing it. Even then, too many distracted drivers. The math is simple…250 pounds of bike/man vs 3500-5000pounds with a 20-50mph difference in speed. Lots of potential for energy transfer and deformation of structure (yours and the bike’s). Group rides were awesome, even when you get dropped. Too many distracted, intoxicated, and frankly angry/crazy people on the road.
